Adding Custom Fields to scripts

You can use custom fields to personalize messages to each recipient. Once a custom field is created and mapped to a group, it will appear in the message creation screen in the drop-down above the text box.

To add a custom field to a message, use the drop-down to select a dynamic variable to insert into the message. You can put your cursor anywhere in the message, and the variable will be added wherever your cursor is.

ThruText automatically populates the custom field in the actual message. For example, if you have the %FirstName% custom field in your message, the contact's first name will be inserted in that place.

Example uses for Custom Fields

Custom fields aren't just for names! You can add any custom field for which there is data in your group to campaign level recommended replies. Here's an example using the %county% custom field to personalize a candidate search reply.

How Custom Fields affects character counts

The character counter is approximate when drafting a message, due to the required variables and custom fields that will be inserted into each message. The character and segment count on the script creator is the exact amount characters in the custom field code and does not represent the character and segment count of the final sent message.

For example, in the text editor:

  • "%county%" - Will be displayed as 8 characters.
  • "%FirstName%" - Will be displayed as 11 characters.
  • "%OrgName%" - Will be displayed as 9 characters.

When these fields are replaced with dynamic variables as the messages are sent, the final character count is different than the approximate character count.

  • When "%county%" is replaced by the variable "Northumberland" the character count is 14.
  • When "%FirstName%" is replaced by the variable "Hana" the character count is 4.
  • When "%OrgName%" is replaced by the variable "the helpful GetThru Support Team" the character count is 32.
